Moonshine Carbon 14 was our best today on a 70 rigger, and green Bam!! Then coupled with the mixed bag of Atlantics and steelhead and cohos, the hook up chances sound pretty good. More will with higher water. Next be prepared to troll j-plugs around the 3 piers in 5-20 feet of water. Well be back to more seasonable temps for mid and end of week with a chance of showers Thursday. Instead of the big gully washer of backside blown out conditions, it may be the backside of only slightly high flows that youll want to target after smaller runoff events from snowmelt. The winner of the Salmon Division was just 1 oz less and caught by Aiden Stafford of Rochester on U Betcha. They also caught their biggest king at 27-1/2 pounds. We continue to lobby for water access on the far side or west side of the Waterport dam hydro pool and the rest of the Oak. This latest rain has come uncharacteristically from the east so to the west may be in slightly better shape then to the east. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30sF on the Oak and probably going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. Flows in the Oak down just a touch, maybe some of that love from Canal water being shared with Johnson Creek is responsible for that. Catch it back on the drop with that slightly high and slightly stained flow and find fresh fish scattered thru the River, esp upstream areas. Dam action has been spotty, but there are people hooking up. And maybe into the early spring! Small and Largemouth Bass are also abundant, aggressive and eager to bend your rod. There are still Kings around, about in a one qtr green fish to three qtr old moldy ratio. Any significant precipitation or melt off or runoff could bring all the trib flows right back high and off color again. Oak Orchard River Salmon Fishing (Any Cat Fish at the Dam?) November 1 For now these are the lowest flows of the whole fall season and are more typical of average fall flows. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between medium and slightly high. Most all fish in real nice shape, some legit fresh Kings after the last rain which isnt always a sure thing in our area low gradient tribs. Nights are cooling down tho, even with the current warm day temps and that has at least made for good fishing action early and late. Good casting chances for light/med spinning spoon or plug chuckers from the foot brigade. Or at best last ditch chances later this spring when the best fresh run fish action may be behind you. Boat angling easily the least expensive bargain for big salmonid angling chances where you get to feel the strike and experience an honest battle without heavier trolling gear. That flow is still actually fishable unless its high AND dirty. Labor Day is when the big Lake Ontario Counties Fall Trout and Salmon Derby will be ending at 1 p.m. laker on an 8 lb leader with light/med spin or levelwind gear and tell me if you still think Lakers dont fight well! This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. Then it was east most of Saturday, which did not help. Nearer the dam and just downstream should show a few more fish. Oak Orchard "Big Boy" Tournaments-- 2021 dates So, flows, weather and fishing action are somewhat up and down. Everyone enjoyed the great hospitality and convenience of the Archers Club and experienced some good fishing. High winds and advisory is likely for something like Fri/Sat/Sun. Oak rivermouth dredging operations are likely days away from finishing. In shore warm water but it didnt stop hard strikes at dawn not much left in the fight afterwards. According to Capt. And lest we forget brown trout where world-class waters such as Niagara River, Oswego River, Oak Orchard Creek, Eighteenmile Creek, Sandy Creek and Maxwell Creek provide peak fishing opportunities in November and December. Monday was much better with a slight breeze on the lake. A trip to the Oak Orchard River and WNY to fish for World Class trout and salmon is still easily the best bargain in trophy fishing. Sorry it took so long! Some crimson males and brighter hens are what anglers are finding nearer the dam and also in the overflow channel. The weather she is a changing again as has been the case for most of this trib season. The rain thru the end of the past weekend was not enough to cause any great change in trib flows. Any future precip could raise flows and bring back dirty water color. The expectations were high as the last trip out we had a good number of silver fish. There were salmon porpoising around the green can and the red can. Trout and salmon rely on alewife in particular in the open Lake waters of Lake Ontario. New Fall Fishing Program. The fishing this last week has been better than the previous couple weeks. Going SW or just by the nature of the LES bands having moved around, accumulations will be more in different nearby areas. Downstream frog water areas are all open with no icing conditions yet. Flows in the Oak are high and stained with about 1 foot of visibility. With the previous high and off color flows in the Oak its been a bit of a challenge for good drifts and swings. Chance of some fresh steelhead migrations all around now and going forward. After a quick hit of real cold weather this past weekend, we are back to mild temps that are forecast at least thru this week. 2023 Fishing reports by Ron Bierstine, Orleans County Sportfishing Coordinator February 21, 2023 Not much precipitation was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. High and stained flows gives up some fresh Oak Orchard chrome for the Licorice Man. Flows in the Oak are high and stained with about one foot of visibility. If you want to help for salmon we can direct you to the contacts for that effort. Fishing out deep has been hit and miss and no real pattern of lures to speak of. Kings are coming, are you ready?! The morning started out great but Lady O offered up some serious chop by noon. Lots of water for fish to spread out and be anywhere they want to be, including the overflow pools. We dropped our port rigger down and within 5 minutes we hooked up on a 18 lb king. Bankside movement may be hard in spots if no trail is broken already. Since its still busy with plenty of Kings around, anglers need to carefully spot the places where the browns are shadowing the Kings. Brown trout reports still about 50% good/50% slow. Egg patterns work best to generate strikes. Flows in the Oak are on the drop slightly after a bump up from the past weekends rain. Not a whole lot of reports coming back in for the Oak but now with flows that are a little more easily drifted guys should be into a few browns or steelhead.
